Obituary for WILLIAM WELFORD LOWERY

William Welford Lowery, 80, was born on January 17, 1938 in Martinsville, Virginia to the late Mary Perkins and James Lowery. On Saturday, February 10, 2018 at 8:06 pm, William was called home to take his final resting place.
William, known as Welford in his hometown, attended Martinsville Public School System, where he graduated from Albert Harris High School in June of 1956.  In high school, Welford was a multiple sport athlete where he excelled in football and basketball.  In his senior year he led his basketball team to a division title championship. After high school Welford pursued a career with the United States military. William served 20 years in the Air Force and was stationed in California, North Carolina and Columbus, Ohio. He also had Temporary Duty Assignments in Alaska and Thailand. He retired in 1976 with the rank of Master Sergeant.
After retiring from the military, William, known to many as "Flip", went on to a 17-year career with Anheuser Busch where he worked as a shift supervisor. Flip was an outgoing and hardworking man with a kind heart. Those who knew him were able to find confidence and wisdom in their conversations. He enjoyed playing cards and spending time with his friends and family. He was an active member of the VFW Post 3764 where he held a board position for many years. Flip loved to look his best as one rarely saw him without one of his signature fedora hats on.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Evelyn Spruill. He leaves behind to cherish his memory;  his son Anthony Lowery (Jennifer) of Gahanna, Ohio; daughter Alisa Brown (Maurice) of Goldsboro, North Carolina; former wife Patricia Lowery of Columbus, Ohio; (5) grandchildren Jamal, Paisley, Alex, Michael, and Jordan; (4) step grandchildren Ashley, Amber, Anthony, and Jacob; (4) Great Grandchildren Malicia, Kason, Bryson, and Paityn; (1) nephew William Edward Spruill of Martinsville, Virginia as well as many other family and friends.
