Obituary for Betty Beatrice Pierce

Betty Beatrice Pierce
Betty Beatrice Pierce, beloved daughter of Nelson Smith and Eva Louise Knaff, was born on February 28, 1934 in Holden, West Virginia. She entered into eternal rest on August 5, 2017, peacefully, at her residence.

Betty, affectionately known as “Baby Sis,” was the oldest of eleven children. She attended Ara Coma High School in Logan, WV, where she was a cheerleader. In 1955, Betty’s parents, Eva and step-father Berford Gammon, moved the entire family to Columbus, Ohio for a better opportunity in life.

In 1956, Betty was hired at the T. Marzetti Company plant at 3838 Indianola Ave., where she worked for 41 years. Betty was dedicated to T. Marzetti. She worked as a line operator and processed special orders. It was in 1996 when she had her first major stroke that she decided it was time to retire.

In 1997, Betty became a member of New Covenant Believers’ Church, where the pastor is Bishop Howard Tillman. Betty loved her church and to hear Pastor Tillman preach.

It was after multiple strokes that Betty’s health started to decline. But she was determined to fight and stay in her home, with the help of her three children, along with her aides, Willa Johnson-Thurman and Sheila King, both of Boschulte’s Pride, who enabled her to do so until August 5, 2017 when she went home to be with the Lord.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Berford and Eva Gammon; and by brothers Clarence Wilson, Freddie Wilson, Robert Gammon, William Gammon and James Gammon.

She is survived by her three loving children: son Donald (Florence) Gammon; daughters Deborah (Nathan) Washington and Tamara Gunnell; grandchildren Donald Jason (Camille) Potts, Brooklynn Gunnell, Donathan Washington and Danielle Washington; great-grandchildren Jayonna, Jalen, Justice, Jordan, Jayshean, Jasia, Jade and Julia; great-great grandchild Torie. Betty is also survived by brother Berford (Rose) Gammon Jr.; sisters Violet Mayo, Brenda (Fred) Snider, Patricia Ann Gammon and Sheila Kay Perrin; sisters in-law Janie Ruth Wilson and Angela Gammon; a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives; and special friends, Shirley Malone and Bernice Newman.
