Obituary for CLARENCE PAYNE

CLARENCE PAYNE
Clarence Kenneth Payne (Red), 81, peacefully passed away at Mount Carmel East Hospital on September 25th, 2018. He was born on a quiet Saturday, May 15th, 1937, in Collinsdale, West Virginia to the proud parents of Maud and James Payne.

Red graduated from Simmons High School in Montgomery, West Virginia. He served his country proudly as a Sergeant in the Headquarters Company, 1st Medium Tank Battalion, 67th Armor, 2nd Armored Division, of the Army at Fort Hood, Texas. He was honored with numerous special awards including sharpshooter (riffle), Expert (4.2 Mortar), Heavy Weapons Expert and a Good Conduct Medal. After returning from the service, Red worked for General Electric and The Timken Company until retirement.

On May 1, 1962, Red was united in marriage to his childhood sweetheart, Brenda Youngblood to whom he had known since a child where they first met and played together. They were married for over 53 years at the time of her passing. To this union they were granted a son, Darren E. Payne.

Red became a master wood builder, his skills were impeccable. He would be very kind to others by sharing his craftsmanship by delighting you with one of his pieces of art. Once Red put his mind to it, it was going to be done.

You could find him often helping others on their project whether remodeling the kitchen, basement, garage or the churches bathrooms or building something unique for his home, it was going to be beautiful.

Red loved finding great buffets to dine at. Who could ever forget how he would visit with Pete, Vee and the guys, young and old alike, daily at the Golden Donuts and Diner on the southside of town.

Red was serious about his cars and motorcycles. He truly loved them, whether old or new. They were surely to all be extra clean. If you really knew Red, then you knew his team would always WIN! You say, how…well, whichever team won, was simply his team regardless of who it was the day before. He always had all the hats to prove it!

Red loved to relax to his many jazz tunes. He was so funny and witty and would tell you a story that you would totally believe. He would soon chuckle when you realized the story was not true. However, rest your heart assure, if Red would give you his word via a “gentlemen handshake”, you could count on him following through.

Red was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, cousin and friend to many. All who met him were impressed not only with his handsome appearance, wittiness but also with his loving character. He will be immeasurably, fully, lovingly missed.

He was preceded in death by wife Brenda J. Payne, brother James Payne Sr., Howard Payne, sisters Mary Elizabeth Saunders, and Hattie Byrd. He leaves a legacy of love and countless memories to be cherished by his children; son, Darren E. Payne of Columbus, OH, daughters, Doris Jackson of Tampa, FL and Debbie K. (Alan) Rice, Anchorage, Alaska; his sister, Joy (James-deceased) Ramsey of Cleveland, OH, Sister-in-Law, Carol June Davenport, special thoughtful nephew Terry Howard and niece Thelma Scruggs and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family and friends.
